SINGAPORE - Responding to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's remarks on Wednesday that Opposition parties would not make the effort to field good minority candidates if not for the Group Representation Constituency (GRC) system, Singapore People's Party candidate Benjamin Pwee argued yesterday that this was not the case.
Speaking after the party's walkabout, Mr Pwee said that with or without the GRC system, Opposition parties are working with minorities. He pointed out that Opposition parties have set up ethnic community bureaus because of a fundamental belief in the need to engage and represent minority voices, and not because of the GRC scheme.
Said Mr Pwee: "None of us in the SPP are (having dialogues) with our Malay friends just because we need to field a minority candidate. I think this is a complete insult to them as our fellow Singaporeans and a complete insult to the system ..."
